Mirmande, the pyramidal village

Located in a landscape of hills, Mirmande is a typical hilltop village in the Drôme department. It is among the 150 most beautiful villages in France.
First mentioned in 1238, the village is an old property of Adhemar, who sold it to the bishop of Valencia. In the mid-fourteenth century, the town is growing and a second wall, still visible today, delimits it. The seventeenth century saw the village grow outside the walls, but in the nineteenth century that Mirmande grows with sericulture (cultivation of silkworms). With the decline of the economy, the village is experiencing difficult times: the twentieth century saw the abandonment and collapse part of the Sainte-Foy church. Moreover, a law exempting from taxes the houses without roofs, many owners who have left the village the discovery of the houses they still have it, so they quickly fall into disrepair. When redeemed, the price is fixed according to the number of tiles remained on the roof. The village is reborn thanks to the many artists who settled there more or less permanently. Andre Lhote (1885 – 1962), cubist painter and writer, contributes to the renewal of Mirmande.
