San Francisco Coyote

Coyotes are the new next-door neighbors for an increasing number of city-dwellers. There has been a resident coyote in the San Francisco park shown here for more than a year, and pups have even been raised here.

I shot this video of a resident male coyote during a roughly two-hour period one Sunday morning. I spotted him near the base of the canyon and followed him as he hunted along a trail toward the top where he caught two gophers along the recently mown roadside shoulder. I continued to follow when the coyote headed back down the canyon to a favorite rock where he has a commanding view up and down the canyon and can rest.

The spot is well away from any of the trails used by people and their dogs. Unfortunately, off-leash dogs sometimes catch wind of him and give chase. One result, shown in this video, is a lot of nervous yipping and howling.
